The Society has developed a research framework for the period 2018-2020. Four themes have been identified to guide the Society’s research activities.
  • Theme One: Queensland’s military history from 1824 to the present

This theme is an acknowledgement of the Society’s primary area of interest. It examines the contribution of all who undertook military service in what is now Queensland from the first landing of British troops until the present time.

  • Theme Two: The QMHS museum, library and archives collections

Objects acquired for the QMHS collections over the last three decades have been documented in a range of administrative systems, with various levels of detail and accuracy. Targeted research will be required to aid uncover the provenance, understand significance, and to interpret the collections.

  • Theme Three: Military sites and places

As a long-term project, members of the QMHS are encouraged to share local information relating to military activities in Queensland. This local information might relate to (but not be limited to) sites such as military properties, drill halls and parade grounds, defensive emplacements and fortifications, recruitment centres. Civilian sites associated with particularly significant military events and deployments (such as embarkation for overseas service, welcome parades, etc.) would also be considered relevant.

  • Theme Four: Commemorative events and anniversaries

This theme explores dramatic events in war and peace, and the impact on Queensland and Queenslanders. Using the QMHS collections where possible, it seeks to gain unique perspectives of events and their impact. It envisages a multi-year proactive program incorporating exhibitions, temporary or travelling displays, seminars, or discussion groups, based on the research and interpretation developed for an event or anniversary.

We also intend to establish a peer-reviewed on-line research publication as a platform to highlight the work of the Society and individuals in the field of historic research.
